The application of dial indicator

May 31, 2024

Dial indicators are widely in the mechanical and industrial sectors to verify the flatness and alignment of various parts and workpieces. It is used to measure the workpiece alignment, squareness, roundness, parallelism, cylindricity etc.

Here are some applications as following:

1. To check for consistency and accuracy in the manufacturing process in a quality environment.

2. To initially set up or calibrate a machine, prior to a production run on the workshop floor.

3. By toolmakers (such as mold makers) in the process of manufacturing precision tooling.

4. In metal engineering workshops, where a typical application is the centering of a lathe's workpiece in a four-jaw chuck.

5. In areas other than manufacturing where accurate measurements need to be recorded (e.g., physics).

6. To check for lateral run-out when affixing a new rotor to an automotive disc brake.

A dial indicator is useless by itself and needs to be attached to a fixed base or a stand so that the tip of the spindle is at a specific height against either a master or reference part. An operator then lifts the spindle with a lever, slides the part to be measured under the spindle and lowers the spindle back down. If the part length is different from the reference, the operator will see the deviation on the indicator's dial. Seeing this part deviation is what reading the indicator is all about.
