Micrometer is a more precision than vernier caliper for precision measurements in engineering, machining, automobile maintenance and manufacturing fields. They’re often used to measure the size of machining parts and workpieces to ensure that components are the right size and fit together properly.
Meanwhile, in manufacturing, they are frequently utilized to confirm that products are consistently made at the correct size and tolerance.
Micrometers are available in a wide range of types and size, which makes them ideal for diverse applications and settings.
Here we introduce different types of micrometers as well as their function as below:
1. Outside Micrometer
Also known as external micrometer, used to measure the outside dimension of component with high accuracy, mechanical/analog type provide metric and inch measurement separately, digital type provides both metric and inch measurement.
Standard type available with size up to 300mm/12in. For large size measurements from 300/12in-1000mm/40in, can choose outside micrometer with interchangeable anvils, for super large size measurements above 1000mm/40in to 3000mm/120in, can choose outside micrometer with adjustable anvils.
2. Inside Micrometer
There are three types of inside micrometers, including three-point internal micrometer, caliper type inside micrometer and tubular rod type inside micrometer.
Featured with self-centering three-point contact points for accurate bore measuring, it can centering self and aligning self, this structure allows the micrometer to be more accurate and stable when measuring blind and through holes. With three-point contact, the errors in the measurement process can be avoided more effectively, thus improving the accuracy of the measurement results.
Combining the characteristics of calipers and micrometers, its measuring surface is caliper-shaped, which can realize the measurement of inner diameter that cannot be achieved by general micrometers, such as measuring some irregularly shaped inner holes or grooves.
Consist of a measuring head and tubular extension rods, the combining of extension rods provide a wide measuring range, the tubular extension rod allows for easy insertion into the object being measured, and the measuring head provides a precise reading of the internal diameter.
3. Indicating Snap Micrometer
Provided a retractable anvil with an indicator for precision measurement of pitch diameter of precision screws and parallelism measurements.
4. Depth Micrometer
Mainly used to measure the depth dimensions of workpieces or objects. Provide the highest accuracy of depth measurement and can be used with various sized interchangeable rods to measure different depth ranges and include various lengths of measuring rods for a range of depths.
5. Blade Micrometer
Featured with blade measuring faces, which used for measuring size of objects such as inner and outer diameters, bosses, grooves, hole diameters by inserting the blade into the clearance in the part to be measured.
6. Tube Micrometer
Designed with ball measuring face specially used to measuring wall thickness of various tubes.
7. Point Micrometer
Features with point anvils measuring tip, specially used for measuring distances in multiple directions such as grooves, holes, and depths simultaneously.
8. Screw Micrometer
Also known as pitch micrometers or plug micrometers, it can be applied to thread measurement of different sizes and pitches, the reading indicates the thread pitch diameter. Screw thread micrometers supply with interchangeable 60° V-shaped and knife-edged anvils that are shaped to match the thread profile, each measuring range is equipped with several pairs of anvils.
9. Disc Brake Micrometer
Also known as a brake pad thickness or outside micrometer, is a professional measuring tool used to accurately measure the thickness of brake pads.
10. Gear Micrometer
Specially used to measure the over-pin diameter of gears, it has interchangeable ball tips for measure various gear modules between 0.6-3.5mm.
11. Spline Micrometer
Features with small faces for measuring splined shafts, slots and keyways.
12. Sheet Metal Micrometer
Especially suited for measuring the thickness of metal sheets, the large dial makes the reading very easy and quick. There are flat measuring faces and spherical measuring faces for option.
13. Deep Throat Micrometer
Features with deep throat frame for measuring thickness of sheet metal, paper and sheep plastic
14. Uni-Micrometer
Mainly used for measuring wall thickness of cylinders and tubes, shoulder to edge distance, rivet head height etc., Uni-mike micrometer provides interchangeable flat anvils and rod anvils, easily interchanged, with constant force ratchet and positive locking clamp, quick and easy zero adjustment.
15. V-Anvil micrometer
Mainly used to measure the outer diameter of cylinder with odd number flutes, such as taps, reamers, end mills, we supply 3 flutes, 5 flutes and 7flutes in order to meet different measurement requirements
16. Disk Micrometer
Designed for measuring the gears and paper thickness with high precision. Digital disk micrometer is designed with a unique anvil and spindle configuration that allows for the precise measurement of disc-shaped workpiece. The anvil is shaped like a flat disc, while the spindle is tapered to allow for easy insertion between the edges of the disc being measured
17. Large Disk Micrometer
Special designed with a unique large size anvil with dial diameter φ60mm,this design allows the micrometer to make more stable contact with the object to be measured, reducing errors during the measurement process. Large disk micrometers are often used to measure large sizes or where high stability isrequired, such as machining, precision manufacturing, and other fields.
18. Hot Sheet Micrometer
Used for measuring thickness of hot rolling sheet metal, it is an important measuring tool in the production process of hot-rolled plate.
Hot sheet micrometer has a high measurement accuracy 0.05mm, which can meet the needs of accurate measurement of the thickness of hot rolled plates.
