What should do if the micrometer won't turn? --- Analysis of common fault causes and repair tips.

March 4, 2026

The micrometer is a precision measuring tool. If it cannot be turned, it will seriously affect the measurement work.

This article will analyze the common causes of the micrometer not turning and provide corresponding repair tips to help

you quickly solve the problem and restore the normal use of the micrometer.

I. Foreign object getting stuck

1. The precise structure of the micrometer is prone to being blocked by tiny dust, metal shavings or other foreign

objects, resulting in poor rotation. At this time, do not attempt to forcefully rotate it, as it may damage the

precision components.

2. Foreign objects should be removed using a clean air gun or a soft-bristled brush. If the foreign object is stuck in

an area that is difficult to clean, a professional cleaner can be used for cleaning.

3. For instance, you can use an ear aspirator to blow off the dust on the surface, use a soft-bristled brush to clean the

threaded parts, or use isopropyl alcohol to clean stubborn stains that are difficult to remove.

II. Insufficient Lubrication

1. The rotating parts of the micrometer require lubrication. If there is insufficient lubricant or it has dried up, it will cause

the rotation to be unsmooth. At this time, an appropriate amount of precision instrument lubricant needs

to be added.

2. Be careful not to add too much lubricant, as this could cause oil residue to accumulate and thereby affect

the accuracy of the micrometer. After adding the lubricant, gently rotate the micrometer several times to ensure

the lubricant is evenly distributed.

3. For example, you can use watch oil or specialized micrometer lubricant. When adding the lubricant, you can

use a syringe or a thin dropper to drop the lubricant onto the area that needs lubrication.

III. Component Wear or Deformation

1. After long-term use, the threads, ratchet wheels, or other components of the micrometer may become worn

or deformed, causing difficulty in rotation. At this point, the worn or deformed components need to be

repaired or replaced.

2. If you lack professional repair skills, it is recommended that you send the micrometer to a professional

repair facility for handling. Doing it yourself may cause even greater damage.

3. For instance, if the threads are severely worn, a new thread pair needs to be replaced; if the ratchet is damaged,

a new ratchet needs to be installed.

IV. Excessive Measurement Force

1. During the measurement process, if the applied measurement force is too large, it may also cause the micrometer

to fail to rotate. When measuring, an appropriate measurement force should be applied to avoid excessive force.

2. You can refer to the user manual of the micrometer to understand the correct measurement force. Some micrometers

are equipped with a force-measuring device, which can help control the measurement force.

3. For example, for a micrometer with a range of 0 - 25mm, the measuring force is generally between 5 and 10 Newtons.

V. Other Causes

1. Besides the above common causes, there are also some other reasons that may prevent the micrometer from rotating.

For instance, the ambient temperature is too low, the internal structure of the micrometer gets damp or corroded, etc.

2. If you are unable to make your own judgment or solve the problem, it is recommended that you contact a professional

maintenance technician for inspection and repair.

3. For instance, if the micrometer gets damp, it can be placed in a dry environment for a period of time to allow it to

dry naturally; if the internal structure of the micrometer is severely corroded, professional cleaning and repair are necessary.
