Depth Measurement Range Analysis of Calipers---Detailed Explanation of Applicable Scenarios for Different Specifications

September 23, 2025

A depth caliper is a commonly used precision measuring tool that can measure the depth of objects, the height

of steps, etc. This article will provide a detailed analysis of the measurement range of the depth micrometer and explain

it in conjunction with different specifications and applicable scenarios, helping you better understand and use

the depth micrometer.

I. Structure and Measurement Principle of the Depth Caliper

1. Ordinary vernier calipers can measure the length, width and thickness of an object. While the depth caliper,

as its name suggests, is specifically designed for measuring depth. It has a sliding ruler, similar to an explorer's

ruler that can go deep into a cave.

2. During the measurement process, place the base against the surface of the object being measured,

and then insert the measuring rod into the desired depth. Just like when we use a ruler to measure the depth of a box.

3. The graduations on the ruler will show the measured depth value. Some depth calipers also have a scale,

    which enables more precise reading.

II. Measurement Range of Depth Calipers

1. The measurement range of depth calipers usually starts from 0. The most common measurement ranges

are 0-150mm, 0-200mm, and 0-300mm. Of course, there are other specifications of depth calipers that can measure

deeper depths, such as 0-500mm, 0-1000mm, etc.

2. When choosing a depth caliper, it is necessary to select the appropriate measurement range based on actual needs.

Just like when choosing a ruler, one should select the appropriate length of the ruler according to the length

to be measured. If the depth to be measured exceeds the measurement range of the caliper, accurate measurement

    will not be possible.

3. Some specialized depth calipers, such as digital depth calipers, offer greater convenience for reading measurement

results and can be connected to a computer for data processing.

III. Application Scenarios of Different Specifications of Depth Calipers

1. 0-150mm depth caliper: Suitable for measuring shallow depths, such as the depth of slots and holes.

It is widely used in fields like mechanical processing and mold manufacturing.

2. Depth caliper ranging from 0 to 200mm: Suitable for measuring medium-depth dimensions, such as pipe inner

diameters and step heights. Widely used in fields like construction and pipeline installation.

3. Depth calipers ranging from 0 to 300mm and above: These are suitable for measuring large depths, such as the depth

of large containers, wells, etc. They are widely used in fields like geological exploration and petrochemicals.

IV. How to Use the Depth Caliper Correctly

1. Before use, check if the zero position of the depth caliper is accurate. If it is not, adjustments need to be made.

2. During the measurement process, the base should be firmly attached to the surface of the object being measured,

and the ruler rod must be kept perpendicular to the measured surface. Only in this way can the accuracy

    of the measurement be ensured.

3. When reading the measurement, pay attention to the alignment of the main scale and the vernier scale,

    and accurately read the value.

V. Maintenance of the Depth Caliper

1. After use, clean the depth caliper and apply anti-rust oil to prevent rusting.

2. To prevent the depth caliper from being damaged, it should be avoided from being subjected to collisions and falls.

3. It is necessary to regularly check the accuracy of the depth caliper and conduct calibration to ensure

    the accuracy of the measurements.
